Which tree wrap to use on your apple tree?

We get asked frequently about wrapping the trunks of our fruit trees.  We have used the two kinds shown below.  They both have pros and cons.   The white spiral wrap is very easy to apply which saves lots if time.  However, it has two cons.  First, it creates a haven for bugs that you don't want in your orchard.  Second, it can become brittle and inflexible over time and constrict the tree truck which can kill the tree.  The poly hardware cloth wrap protects the tree and serves to keep mulch off the trunk.   The main con is that it's time consuming to cut and fasten onto the trees.
